Porky's Pit Barbecue — Review by Brennen Taylor
Manchester, United States — Barbecue
Porky's Pit Barbecue is a highway-side barbecue spot that doesn't look like much from the outside but delivers exceptional pulled pork sandwiches and smoked meats. Despite initial skepticism about the presentation, the juicy pork and well-balanced sauce proved this is a hidden gem worth the visit.
What was great: Pulled pork sandwich is juicy and flavorful with perfectly balanced barbecue sauce, baked beans are delicious, good value for the price, fresh smoked meat made daily
What could improve: Turkey was dry, initial presentation looked underwhelming and not appetizing, portions seemed smaller than expected
The Dishes
The standout dish was undoubtedly the pork barbecue sandwich, which featured incredibly juicy pulled pork that exceeded all expectations. The owners smoke and prepare everything fresh daily, and it showed in the quality of the meat. The nacho pork sandwich offered a creative twist with crushed tortilla chips and cheese mixed in, providing a unique texture, though it was less impactful overall. The beef brisket and turkey breast combo came as a half and half plate but the turkey proved disappointingly dry compared to the exceptional pork. The baked beans were a stellar side dish, sweet and perfectly seasoned.
The Experience
Located on a rural Tennessee highway, Porky's Pit Barbecue has a modest, unassuming exterior that could easily be overlooked by passing motorists. However, upon entering, the cleanliness and care put into the establishment become apparent. The owners, a husband and wife team, are visible in the operation and personally prepare the meat. The restaurant features a drive-thru option for convenience, and there's a wood-burning smoker setup out back that shows the authentic commitment to the craft. The vibe is genuinely hospitable, with the owners personally greeting customers and chatting about their preparations.
Value and Pricing
For $30, the meal offers solid value, particularly for the quality of the pulled pork sandwich. The pricing structure feels reasonable and comparable to fast food establishments, yet the quality far exceeds typical drive-thru barbecue spots. The portions may not appear overwhelming at first glance, but they satisfy, especially when paired with the delicious sides.
Notable Moments
That's some of the best pulled pork I've had in a long freaking time. Barbecue sauce is just the right amount. Gives it a good little hint of flavor, but the actual pork itself is so juicy.
The reviewers initially judged the food too quickly based on presentation but were completely won over after tasting the pork. One patron even recognized the reviewers from their social media presence while they were eating.
The Verdict
Porky's Pit Barbecue is a prime example of not judging a restaurant by its cover. While the exterior and initial plating may not impress, the quality and authenticity of the smoked meats absolutely deliver. This is an excellent stop for anyone seeking genuine barbecue in rural Tennessee, and the pulled pork sandwich alone warrants a return visit. The reviewer gave it a solid 8-9 out of 10 and emphasized that this is a top-tier option for fast food style drive-thru barbecue.
