Bang Belly — Review by Luke Martin
Fogo Island, Canada — Contemporary Newfoundland with global influences
Bang Belly is a remarkable fine dining establishment on remote Fogo Island that delivers world-class cuisine despite its isolated location. The chef combines fresh local seafood and traditional Newfoundland ingredients with creative global techniques, from Thai coconut curry cod to Indian-spiced jigs dinner pakora. Every dish impressed with impeccable execution and presentation, making it an absolute must-visit destination.
What was great: Incredibly fresh locally-sourced seafood, creative dishes combining traditional Newfoundland ingredients with global cuisines, flawless cod preparation, inventive appetizers like the jigs dinner pakora, beautiful plating, exceptional service from Ian and Sandy
What could improve: Nothing mentioned
The Dishes
The meal began with an amuse-bouche of pureed root vegetables with dried kale and tomato oil, setting the tone for creative preparation. The fish toast appetizer featured Arctic char and cod mousse served on crunchy toast with mustard pickles that provided perfect acidity, described as having a texture like whipped cream. The jigs dinner pakora transformed Newfoundland's most famous traditional dish into an Indian-inspired creation, featuring fried turnips, carrots, and flaky salt beef with masala spices, proving that local ingredients can transcend cultural boundaries.
The main course of locally-caught cod in coconut curry was standout, with the fish so fresh and flaky it barely needed pressure to separate. The curry sauce delivered rich, silky coconut flavor enhanced by crispy rice garnish. Potato dumplings arrived topped with pickled partridge berries, local ingredients that appear throughout the menu. Dessert was Newfoundland tiramisu served in a mug, using local cookies instead of traditional ladyfingers, with frozen partridge berries at the bottom, followed by a beet cracker with molasses.
The Experience
The restaurant occupies a historic building that once served as Fogo Island's fire department. A hand-painted sign was discovered under the floorboards and now decorates the space, connecting diners to local history. The atmosphere combined rustic charm with refined dining, and the staff, particularly manager Sandy and owner Ian, provided exceptional hospitality and genuine warmth. The setting offers views of the North Atlantic in one of Canada's most remote locations.
Value and Pricing
No specific prices were mentioned in the review, but the quality of ingredients, preparation, and presentation suggests premium pricing typical of fine dining establishments.
Notable Moments
They've got really amazing menu of what seems to be mostly local ingredients and produce, and despite being in the middle of nowhere here in Fogo Island, these guys are cutting absolutely no corners.
It's like Thai coconut curry with cod and crispy rice. Look at how flaky this cod is. Barely even need to put any pressure on it. This fork just goes right through it.
The reviewer was so impressed that he noted the restaurant's commitment to quality food preparation in an incredibly isolated location with limited supply chains is genuinely something to be proud of.
The Verdict
Bang Belly is an essential destination for anyone visiting Fogo Island or Newfoundland. The restaurant proves that exceptional cuisine isn't limited to major cities, as chef and owner Ian demonstrate mastery of both traditional Newfoundland cooking and innovative global techniques. Fresh local seafood, creative presentations, and warm hospitality make this a memorable dining experience. Highly recommended for food lovers, adventurous eaters, and anyone seeking authentic cuisine rooted in regional ingredients and traditions.
