BP gas station restaurant — Review by KSIĄŻULO

Poland, Poland — Polish traditional

This BP gas station meal was a disappointing experience across multiple dishes costing 135 zloty total. While the ground meat cutlet was relatively the least offensive item, nearly everything else from the żurek soup to the schnitzel to the vegetable sides was poorly executed, tasting like reheated food that had been sitting too long under heat lamps. The reviewer concluded he would have preferred a hot dog to any of these offerings.

What was great: The ground meat kotlet (cutlet) was relatively the best dish, being meat-forward and less dry than the schnitzel; the fresh roll was decent

What could improve: Żurek soup was watery with a soft, parówka-like kielbasa with unnatural artificial taste; schnitzel was grey, paper-thin, dry with stale breading; cabbage was excessively sour with unnatural lemon taste and glutinous texture; potatoes were falling apart with oxidized exterior; Deviled chicken cordon bleu had glutinous cheese and was overpriced; flaki (tripe) were under-seasoned and reminded him of jarred versions; coleslaw was grey, dry, and bitter; kielbasa from the grill was overly salty

The Dishes

The reviewer ordered three full lunches with sides and a kielbasa. The żurek soup arrived with a soft, parówka-like kielbasa that had an unnatural, artificial taste lacking any proper flavor. The broth itself was watery with just a hint of marjoram, tasting more like flavored water than proper żurek. The schnitzel set included a grey-colored, paper-thin kotlet that appeared stale with breading that had absorbed moisture and become limp, resembling a chip left open for days. The meat inside was gelatinous and offered no resistance, dissolving under the tongue like a chicken nugget. The accompanying cabbage was excessively sour, with an unnatural lemon-like bite that was glutinous and revolting. The boiled potatoes had developed an oxidized exterior while remaining white inside, practically falling apart under pressure.

The ground meat cutlet was the most palatable dish, being meat-forward and less dry than expected, though still somewhat compressed and lacking ideal texture. It came with the same problematic boiled potatoes and a watery carrot-and-pea mixture that tasted sandy from sitting too long. The Deviled chicken cordon bleu was overpriced at 17 zloty just for the cutlet. The chicken was oddly moist like a paste, but the cheese was glutinous and poorly melted, creating an unappetizing consistency. The accompanying grey coleslaw was dry like wood shavings, bitter, and despite initial appearance of dryness, released excess liquid when bitten. Finally, the grilled kielbasa was overly salty, tasting like cheap supermarket quality, requiring additional bread and condiments to make it palatable.

The Experience

The ordering process was straightforward at this BP gas station food counter. However, the obvious issue was that all food appeared to have been sitting under heat lamps for extended periods. The reviewer noted visible signs of deterioration across multiple items, including color changes (greyish tones, pinkish hues), oxidation on potatoes, and the characteristic taste and texture of reheated food that should have been discarded long ago.

Value and Pricing

The reviewer paid 134.40 zloty total, which initially seemed reasonable for three lunches, two soups, and a kielbasa. However, individual items were relatively expensive for gas station food. The schnitzel set at 32 zloty and the deviled chicken at 34 zloty were particularly poor values given the quality received. For comparison, the reviewer mentioned that at 30+ zloty, one could find better options at actual milk bars or choose a simple hot dog instead.

Notable Moments

I would rather eat a hot dog. Having five zloty in my pocket and being more satisfied. This żurek tastes awful.

This is hospital-level food, not even at the level of a bad milk bar.

For 135 zloty, which seemed inexpensive, we basically bought some trash.

Looking at this table, these roasted potatoes look like some kind of seller. The coleslaw is grey. I'll be damned.

The Verdict

This BP gas station meal was universally poor, with the reviewer rating the żurek 2/10, the flaki 3/10, the schnitzel set as mediocre at best, and the deviled chicken as one of the worst meals experienced. He concluded that even McDonald's would be a safer and more appetizing choice. The reviewer expressed concern about food safety protocols, questioning how long these items had been sitting out and suggesting they should have been discarded much earlier. While gas station dining is sometimes necessary on long drives, he recommended pulling off the highway to find a local milk bar instead. For travelers forced to eat at gas stations, he recommends avoiding these prepared lunch meals entirely and opting for simple hot dogs instead. The only potential positive was that at least the food was technically edible, though barely worth consuming.
