Bracia — Review by WOJEK
Durrës, Albania
Bracia is a popular seafood shop-restaurant in Durrës with 4.9 stars and over 1000 reviews. While the fresh shrimp was excellent and meatiness impressive, the octopus and squid were disappointing due to inadequate preparation time. The overall experience was pleasant with friendly service and remarkably affordable pricing for quality seafood.
What was great: Fresh seafood, large shrimp, pleasant atmosphere, friendly staff, excellent prices (100 zloty for entire seafood platter), operates as both shop and restaurant until 9 PM
What could improve: Octopus was rubbery and tough, squid was chewy - both appeared to be prepared too quickly without proper tenderizing beforehand
The Dishes
We ordered a mixed seafood platter that included large shrimp, squid, octopus, and french fries. The shrimp were the standout item - meaty, substantial, and packed with flavor. Each bite delivered a satisfying mouthful of tender meat. The french fries, made from potato, were crispy and well-prepared. The squid, however, presented a textural challenge, being somewhat rubbery and chewy. The octopus similarly suffered from excessive chewiness, likely due to being cooked too quickly without proper tenderizing beforehand. The accompanying salad was simple but refreshing, made with just lettuce, onion, and an oil and lemon dressing.
The Experience
Bracia operates as a hybrid fish shop and restaurant, allowing diners to select fresh seafood directly from the display and watch it being prepared. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, with smiling staff who actively engaged with customers. The women working there were particularly friendly and hospitable. The establishment stays open until 9 PM, which is unusual for typical fish markets that close by 2 PM. There was consistent foot traffic throughout our visit, indicating this is a beloved local spot.
Value and Pricing
The entire seafood platter cost 100 Polish zloty, which represents exceptional value. Given that seafood is typically expensive and this platter contained generous portions of shrimp, squid, octopus, and fries, the pricing was entirely appropriate and surprisingly affordable for fresh catch in a tourist area.
Notable Moments
The staff surprised us by gifting three complimentary beers, claiming we had beautiful eyes - a charming gesture that reflected the genuine warmth of Albanian hospitality.
The revelation that shrimp should ideally be soaked in milk for several hours before frying to achieve a tender, crispy texture sparked discussion about proper seafood preparation techniques.
The Verdict
While Bracia offers excellent shrimp and an overall pleasant dining experience with outstanding prices, the preparation of octopus and squid fell short. The issue wasnt the freshness of ingredients but rather insufficient preparation time - these items require soaking, boiling, or other tenderizing methods before frying. For diners seeking fresh fish and premium shrimp, Bracia is highly recommended. However, those ordering squid or octopus should be prepared for a chewier experience. This establishment is best suited for seafood enthusiasts who appreciate fresh catch, locals seeking authentic flavors, and budget-conscious travelers looking for quality meals at reasonable prices.
