The Dishes

The main event was a colossal burger challenge featuring eight fresh beef patties cooked to an 81/19 ratio, each topped with two slices of American cheese for a total of 16 slices. The burger weighed approximately 7 pounds and incorporated a unique twist: cheesesteak meat with grilled onions, peppers, and white cheese layered between the patties, creating bursts of cheesesteak flavor throughout the eating experience. Randy noted that the beef was all fresh, never frozen, and the patties were made in-house by the owners.

The sides were optional but substantial. Randy enjoyed thick, fresh tomato slices, crisp lettuce, and an array of homemade fried items including waffle fries, sweet potato waffle fries, hand-dipped onion rings, fried pickles, and fried mushrooms. The fries had a delicious quality that Randy appreciated, returning to them throughout the challenge. For dessert, Randy received a special Oreo funnel cake, which he found excellent despite the enormous quantity of food already consumed.

The Experience

The atmosphere was electric, with a crowd of supporters cheering Randy on throughout the challenge. The owners, Brent and Kyle who are brothers, created an enthusiastic environment with their staff. The restaurant appeared busy with customers ordering burgers and cheesesteaks, indicating a popular local establishment. The staff was attentive and responsive, with Randy specifically praising his favorite employee who promptly brought him a Coke Zero with no ice during the challenge.

Value and Pricing

The challenge cost $60 if failed. Upon victory, Randy received his entire meal for free, a t-shirt for his collection, a free dessert, a $50 gift certificate for a return visit, and his name and photo on the Wall of Fame. The quality of the meat and fresh preparation suggests solid value, with the homemade sides adding to the overall worth of the meal.

I defeated the burger challenge by eating 6 and 1/2 lb of their Philly cheesesteaks. It was amazing.

Randy reflected on his previous victory at Carnival Cafe the year before, when he set the original cheesesteak record. His Czech friend Radim had subsequently defeated the burger challenge with 6 pounds, a record that stood unbeaten for exactly one year. Randy's decision to add the cheesesteak meat to the burger was strategic, combining his previous success with a new challenge.

The record time doesn't matter. All you got to do is beat the record quantity, and I did that in 29 minutes and 56 seconds.

The Verdict

Carnival Cafe earned high marks for both the challenge experience and general restaurant quality. Randy emphasized that the quality cheesesteak was so impressive on his first visit that he would order it again on a normal visit, though the burger proved equally compelling. The owners' commitment to fresh, never-frozen beef and in-house preparation of sides demonstrates a focus on quality that extends beyond just the challenge menu.
