Dead End BBQ — Review by Randy Santel

Knoxville, United States — Barbecue

Randy Santel and Radim completed Dead End BBQ's Family Feast Challenge in 42 minutes and 30 seconds, successfully becoming the first two people to conquer the 112-ounce platter meant for 4-6 people. Every component impressed, from the perfectly glazed ribs and succulent chicken thighs to the well-executed sides and homemade desserts. The challenge offered excellent value at a $75 failure fee, with winners receiving free meals and wall of fame recognition.

What was great: Ribs with excellent glaze, smoked chicken thighs with skin, tender brisket, pulled pork, pimento macaroni and cheese, beans with smoked sausage, quality bread, homemade desserts including banana pudding and peanut butter pie

What could improve: Randy's usual dislike of blue cheese, though he admitted the Red White and Bleu coleslaw wasn't as bad as expected

The Dishes

The Family Feast Platter featured an impressive array of smoked meats starting with a half rack of ribs that arrived warm and tender, coated in what staff revealed was a glaze rather than traditional sauce. Randy described the ribs as fantastic and noted they needed no additional sauce. Two smoked chicken thighs with skin were standout items, with Randy particularly impressed by how the skin added to the overall flavor profile, even comparing them favorably to rotisserie chicken he makes at home.

The brisket came sliced at half a pound and was delightful even after cooling slightly during filming. The pulled pork was versatile, working beautifully on the provided bread which Randy praised as delicious. Four 12-ounce sharable sides accompanied the meats: the Red, White, and Bleu coleslaw with bacon bits that Randy found surprisingly good despite his documented aversion to blue cheese, pimento macaroni and cheese that he loved on burgers and thoroughly enjoyed here, Rocky Top Potato Salad that was dense and mustard-based, and Beans with Smoked Sausage that Randy ranked as his favorite side. The challenge included assorted Southern-style cornbread with jalapeño variations and peach jalapeño jam that paired wonderfully with the cornbread, plus Texas toast and a bonus smoked bologna sandwich. For optional desserts, they sampled homemade banana pudding, chocolate Pond Gap Pie with Oreo crust and mousse, and peanut butter pie, with the banana pudding earning particular praise.

The Experience

Dead End BBQ created an energetic atmosphere with a crowd actively cheering on the competitors throughout the challenge. The restaurant, which started about 15 years ago on the dead end of a street, has built credibility through extensive BBQ competitions. Staff were knowledgeable and helpful, answering questions about dishes and even suggesting pairings like the peach jalapeño jam with cornbread. The 45-minute time limit proved adequate, with Radim finishing the base challenge around 35 minutes and Randy completing everything in just over 42 minutes.

Value and Pricing

At a $75 failure fee for the entire Family Feast platter containing over seven pounds of food, Randy noted this represented a very good deal for barbecue in today's market. Winners received free meals, commemorative t-shirts, and placement on the restaurant's Wall of Fame, adding incentive beyond just the food itself.

Notable Moments

You can't really go wrong with whatever you order, at least so far from what we've had on our platters. All of it's been great.
I don't think you need to order all three here. Maybe come back a few times and get a different one each time.

Randy and Radim's competitive banter added entertainment value, with references to their previous challenge meeting in Johnson City. The crowd's engagement and the friendly staff interactions made the challenge feel like a community event rather than just a solo eating competition.

The Verdict

Dead End BBQ successfully delivered a challenge that was both substantial and genuinely delicious, proving that quantity doesn't require sacrificing quality. The restaurant's commitment to homemade sides and desserts, combined with properly smoked meats and a welcoming atmosphere, makes it a must-visit for barbecue enthusiasts in Knoxville. Whether attempting the challenge or ordering from their regular menu, diners will find consistently excellent food that justifies the drive.
