Kiosk Doner — Review by KSIĄŻULO

Katowice, Poland — Turkish/Middle Eastern Kebab

Kiosk Doner, a new kebab shop in Katowice, disappoints despite high expectations and a 33 PLN price tag for gemuse. The main issues are an excessively greasy, burnt bun and dry chicken that lacks flavor, with overwhelming amounts of sauce masking the natural taste of ingredients. While the sauces themselves are decent and the grilled vegetables show promise, poor execution and excessive oil result in a heavy, unpleasant eating experience that falls short of quality gemuse standards.

What was great: The sauces were decent quality, grilled vegetables looked better when properly prepared, small menu concept is appealing

What could improve: Bun was overcooked, burnt, and extremely greasy, chicken was dry and thin-sliced, excessive oil saturation making everything taste like fat, bitter aftertaste from burnt bread, overly wet packaging causing sogginess, overwhelming amount of sauces drowning out individual flavors, meat was oily and fatty

The Dishes

The reviewer ordered gemuse with chicken for 33 PLN and a beef lawasz for 37 PLN, along with a regular bun option at 38 PLN. The gemuse came heavily loaded with extremely thin slices of chicken, enormous slices of cucumber, red cabbage in marinade, tomato, potatoes, eggplant, and lettuce. The chicken slices were exceptionally thin and appeared more shredded than properly sliced. The beef lawasz contained similar vegetable components with much thicker pieces of flank meat that were described as exceptionally oily and fatty.

The Experience

The restaurant operates with a minimal menu featuring only three main options: bun, lawasz, and gemuse, with three sauce choices available. The establishment appeared newly opened with dim lighting and limited visibility into the kitchen. The reviewer noted that despite visiting during opening hours, the meat appeared to have been on the spit for too long, possibly since the previous evening. Service was casual and the atmosphere felt casual but the small menu and lack of complexity created a straightforward ordering experience.

Value and Pricing

At 33 PLN for gemuse and 37 PLN for lawasz, prices are competitive with other establishments in Katowice but still expensive considering the quality issues encountered. An additional 9 PLN supplement was required for beef instead of chicken. The reviewer found these prices unjustifiable given the poor execution of the dishes.

Notable Moments

This bun is fried, completely fried. I don't know if they had grease on the griddle or if they smear it with fat from outside, or if they pour it on. I don't know. But it's extremely greasy.
You taste all the sauces and burned bread and overfried bread. Everything tastes like fat and burnt bread and fried bread. I feel only sauces and burnt bun constantly.
I didn't see this before. It's black. Well, black on every side.

The Verdict

Kiosk Doner represents a disappointing new entry to Katowice's kebab scene despite initial hype suggesting it rivals Radzionkow or Sopot quality. The primary culprit is an excessively greased and burnt bun that dominates every bite with a bitter, oily aftertaste. Combined with dry chicken and an overwhelming amount of sauce that masks all individual flavors, the overall experience feels heavy and unpleasant. The reviewer would have preferred the gemuse from the competing Wiral establishment despite that shop's own issues with undercooked buns. This restaurant is not recommended for those seeking authentic, quality gemuse, though the concept and sauce variety have potential if execution improves significantly, particularly regarding proper bun preparation and meat handling.
