Legend — Review by Brennen Taylor
Laverne, United States — Southern Soul Food
Legend is a hidden gem food truck parked outside a car lot in Laverne, Tennessee, featuring Southern soul food inspired by Memphis legends. The whiting fish sandwich impressed with two perfectly breaded and seasoned fillets, while the Philly cheese egg rolls delivered that greasy, concocted food truck experience. The smash burger, though heavily peppered with char, offered great smoky flavor from open grill cooking.
What was great: Whiting fish sandwich with two generous fillets, perfectly seasoned and not overdone. Philly cheese egg rolls that were ooey gooey inside with great texture. Smash burger with grilled onions and excellent smoky barbecue flavor from open grill cooking.
What could improve: Lettuce in the fish sandwich was somewhat translucent. Egg roll wrap texture could have been better as a normal Philly cheese instead.
The Dishes
The whiting fish sandwich was the standout of the visit, arriving with two generous fillets completely stuffed into the bun. The fish itself was spectacular with excellent batter, seasoning, and flavor that wasn't overdone. Each piece had that perfect whisker-lick quality where you want to savor every bite. The only minor complaint was the lettuce being somewhat translucent, but it didn't detract from the overall excellence of the sandwich.
The Philly cheese egg rolls were massive and exactly what customers want from a food truck - that greasy, crazy concoction you won't find at regular restaurants. The crispy exterior made an airtight crunch when bitten, revealing a gooey, melted cheese and meat interior. The reviewers noted they could see why a customer came back two days in a row for these.
The smash burger arrived heavily seasoned with visible char and grilled onions. While heavily peppered and smoky-tasting, it wasn't truly smashed despite the name, but the open grill cooking gave it excellent barbecue-style flavor. The grilled onions were a nice touch, though some questioned whether all the black seasoning was char or spice.
The Experience
The food truck was parked outside a car lot in Laverne, Tennessee, with artwork honoring Memphis legends including Young Doll, Johnny Cash, and Tina Turner. The truck generated impressive foot traffic with multiple customers waiting in line during the visit. People driving by were breaking their necks to look at the iconic artwork on the truck. The casual, drive-by nature of the setup made it a word-of-mouth spot rather than something you'd find on Google or Yelp.
Value and Pricing
The meal totaled around 40-41 dollars for the three items, offering solid value for generous portions. Each item was substantial and well-prepared, justifying the price point for a food truck.
Notable Moments
The whiting fish sandwich is like the guy she tells you not to worry about, man. Look at all that.
This is one of them spots where you only know because of word of mouth. This ain't popping up on Yelp. This ain't popping up on Google.
The Verdict
Legend is a must-visit food truck for anyone in Laverne seeking authentic Southern soul food. The whiting fish sandwich alone makes it worth a stop, and the Philly cheese egg rolls are exactly what food trucks should deliver - unique, indulgent creations. Perfect for those who want quality food truck fare with exceptional flavor and generous portions. This is the type of spot that builds its reputation through word of mouth and repeat customers, and rightfully so.
