Seoul, South Korea — Korean Seafood
Mike discovers an all-you-can-eat live red snow crab buffet in Seoul, featuring fresh steamed crabs with incredibly tender meat and rich umami flavor from the crab butter. The experience is unforgettable with complimentary crab roe fried rice and exceptional value for an unlimited seafood experience.
What was great: Fresh live red snow crab steamed to perfection, tender and succulent meat, rich crab butter and miso, complimentary crab roe fried rice, unlimited portions, affordable pricing at approximately $12 USD per person
What could improve: Nothing mentioned
The Dishes
The star of this buffet is undoubtedly the fresh live red snow crab, steamed to order and brought to the table piping hot. These Korean red snow crabs are distinctly different from the frozen varieties found elsewhere, featuring thinner spider-like legs and a vibrant red body. The meat is remarkably tender and succulent, rivaling the tenderness of blue crab with the sweetness of king crab, according to Mike. The real treasure lies in the crab internals and miso butter found within the shell, which Mike describes as pure umami and nature's own crab pudding. The joints of the crab, filled with delicate meat and crab miso, prove to be the most flavorful portions. The buffet also includes complimentary side dishes: shrimp tempura, edamame, steamed greens, kimchi, and bean sprout soup. A highlight is the crab roe fried rice, cooked with the crab butter and shells, topped with fresh crab meat for an additional dollar. This creates an extraordinary dish that combines the umami of the crab butter with fresh protein.
The Experience
The atmosphere is casual and unpretentious, with minimal frills focused entirely on the quality of the crabs. The restaurant features multiple steamers in the back kitchen, keeping a steady stream of fresh crabs coming to tables. Staff are attentive and knowledgeable, specifically instructing customers on the proper way to eat every part of the crab, including how to extract the miso butter from the shell. The service ensures diners understand they should request shells to be used for the complimentary fried rice preparation. Despite the casual setting, the experience feels special due to the freshness and quality of the offerings.
Value and Pricing
The buffet pricing is exceptional at approximately $12 USD per person, which Mike considers an incredible deal for unlimited live snow crab. The complimentary crab roe fried rice, typically a premium item, adds significant value. Additional fried rice portions can be ordered for around one dollar each. This pricing structure makes premium seafood accessible to everyday diners, far more affordable than what one would pay at steakhouses or high-end seafood restaurants elsewhere.
Notable Moments
I've had snow crab all through my life. It's always been frozen. Even the red ones I've had, it's always been frozen as well. So when you're eating it fresh, it's freaking night and day.
The crab butter right there is the most flavorful part of the crab for sure. And you're just kind of eating it like a crab pudding. It's like nature's umami right there.
I don't know if a place like this exists anywhere else. I never really seen a place like this in Seoul before.
The Verdict
Mike rates this as a must-try experience for anyone visiting Seoul, particularly seafood enthusiasts. While the crab-focused menu means you would need to consume approximately twenty crabs to feel completely full, the flavor journey and quality make this a destination restaurant rather than a casual meal. The fresh live crabs, expertly prepared and minimally dressed to showcase their natural sweetness and umami, represent some of the finest seafood Mike has encountered. This restaurant is best for adventurous eaters, crab lovers, and anyone seeking authentic Korean premium dining at accessible prices.
