Tingda Seafood Restaurant — Review by Blondie in China

Qingdao, China — Chinese Seafood

A fantastic seafood feast in Qingdao featuring fresh pippies, mala prawns, and steamed crab paired with an excellent chili oil dipping sauce. The meal was incredibly affordable at around 117 RMB (approximately $17) including beer, offering exceptional value for high-quality seafood.

What was great: Fresh pippies, juicy mala prawns with spicy chili oil, steamed crab with crab yellow, affordable prices, cheap beer

What could improve: Pippy sauce was a little delicate compared to usual preferences

The Dishes

The seafood selection at this Qingdao establishment was impressively fresh and diverse. The pippies arrived prepared with garlic, onion, and chili, offering a super fresh and almost creamy texture, though the accompanying sauce was noted as slightly delicate for personal taste preferences. The mala prawns were absolutely massive and juicy, featuring a spicy mouth-numbing chili oil that proved to be the perfect companion for the pippies when used as a dipping sauce. While the prawns themselves were quite messy to eat due to their need for peeling, the sauce base was excellent and transformed the overall eating experience. The steamed crab, though not in peak season, still contained crab yellow inside, which is the prized element diners look for. When paired with a simple vinegar and ginger dipping sauce, the combination of sweet crab meat, umami crab yellow, and tangy ginger created a perfectly balanced dish that exemplified simplicity done right.

The Experience

The restaurant provided an authentic seafood dining experience with a casual, straightforward atmosphere typical of Chinese seafood establishments. Service was efficient with dishes arriving in sequence, allowing the reviewer to enjoy each preparation.

Value and Pricing

The pricing was exceptional value. The entire seafood spread including pippies, massive prawns, crab, and cooking fee totaled 117 RMB, approximately $17. Additionally, Tingda beer was available for just four RMB per bottle, roughly 60 cents, which the reviewer found remarkably affordable.

Notable Moments

All up for the seafood plus the cooking fee. It came to 117 rem around $17. And of course here in Tingda, got to get a Tingda beer too. This came to four ramen mimbe which is like 60 cents and I found that kind of wild.
That combo of the sweet crab meat, umami crab yellow, and that tangy gingery dipping sauce. It's simple, but absolutely perfect.

The Verdict

This Qingdao seafood restaurant delivers exceptional quality and value, making it an outstanding destination for seafood lovers visiting the coastal city. The combination of fresh, well-prepared seafood and incredibly low prices makes it ideal for budget-conscious travelers and seafood enthusiasts alike.
